Looking and feeling bloated is no fun!Not only can bloating cause physical discomfort, it can also make you feel less than confident in your body.
Although we all experience bloating from time to time, it can be a real nuisance when you experience it on a regular day-to-day basis or too often. In this post, I’ll be sharing the 3 foods that cause bloating and what to eat for a flatter stomach.
So, as you may know by now when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, it’s not primary just about what you eat, but also about eliminating or cutting back on the foods that are causing certain issues in the first place.
And bloating issues is no exception. As well as other factors, a lot of the time it’s mainly caused by what we consume on a day-to-day basis. So without further ado, here are the 3 foods you could be consuming regularly that are causing or contributing to bloating:
Salt can make you very bloated. I remember the days when I used to eat way too much salt in my food and I would wake up in the morning and my face would be all puffed up.
I never put the two and two together until I learned how sodium causes water retention, making your body hold on to water, which then makes you appear puffier and rounder than usual.
So cut back on the salt. And by the way, if you’re still using table salt, stop and get rid of it ASAP.
But bear in mind, even when you’re using a high-quality salt, your body doesn’t need a lot of it, so, don’t overdo it.
Soft drinks, pop, soda… whatever you call them, we all know they ain’t good for us! The carbonated water, which is one of the main ingredients in fizzy drinks causes bloating and gas.
Fizzy drinks are also linked to weight gain because of the processed ingredients and the excessive amounts of sugar in them.
And the “diet” versions are not much better as they contain toxic artificial sweeteners (used to replace the sugar), which contribute to a whole host of other health issues.
So there’re a few reasons to cut back or avoid fizzy drinks for good.
3. Dairy Products
Most people have trouble digesting the sugar ‘lactose’ found in dairy products, which then causes digestive issues such as bloating.
Dairy is also very acid forming and causes inflammation in the body, which can trigger acne and other skin issues. I would avoid dairy like a plague if I were you as it’s linked to so many health issues and chronic diseases.
There are many dairy alternatives in the market today and if you’re worried about your calcium intake, fear not!
There’re plenty of natural sources of calcium in plant-based foods such as leafy greens, sesame seeds and even oranges to name a few…
So now we are clear on what to avoid, here are some of the foods to eat for less bloating and a flatter stomach.
All types of melons are great for reducing bloating but watermelons are by far the best because of the high-water content. Watermelons are up to 92% water!
They’re a natural diuretic and when you eat them they cause you to urinate excess water and salt out of the body, which eliminates bloating.
Lemons are also a natural diuretic and a gentle laxative making them great for eliminating bloating and giving you a flatter stomach.Make a habit of drinking warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice every day when you wake up before you eat anything.
As well as eliminating bloating this simple but effective habit has amazing health benefits. Click here to read them.
Like I mentioned above too much sodium in the body causes water retention and since bananas are loaded with potassium, they help balance out the sodium levels resulting to less bloating and gas.
Also, the soluble fibre in bananas relieves and prevents constipation, which may be another reason you may be experiencing bloating.
Remember never eat unripe bananas!! or any other unripe fruit for that matter. Consuming unripe fruit can actually contribute to bloating. So only eat bananas that have the black spots on the skin, which indicate that the starch has turned to sugar and they’re ready for consumption.
Dandelion greens have powerful detoxifying and cleansing properties and are high in nutrients. As well as many health benefits, they act as a diuretic getting rid of excess water in the body, which eliminates bloating resulting to a flatter tummy.
If you have no idea what to do with dandelion greens, why not mix them with fruit and make a dandelion green smoothie.
