Having a morning routine that centres around healthy, positive habits will transform not just your health but your whole life for the better. It’s important to acknowledge that everything is interconnected and our everyday habits effects all areas of our lives and the quality of life we actually end up experiencing.
I know this from personal experience because prior to leading a healthy lifestyle, I was not a morning person one bit! In fact, I hated mornings! I would go to bed late and wake up in the afternoon most days! Yep, I hold my hands up, I was that girl!
When I started to become more health-conscious, I learned about the importance of waking up early, so I made the decision to start getting up in the morning (like a normal person) and I even took it a step further and developed positive habits around my morning routine and my life transformed for the better.
Now I love mornings! There’s just something magical about them! When you awaken from a nights sleep you’re all re-charged and ready for a brand new day ( I love that feeling!) and what you do in those first few hours upon awakening is very important. Below are 8 powerful morning habits that will change your life:
1.Get Up Early
The habit of waking up early is very common amongst successful and ultra successful people and there’s a good reason for this. Studies show that people who wake up early are better at making decisions, plans, setting and achieving their goals and are generally healthier, happier and more productive than late risers.
The easiest way to reset your body clock so you’re able to get up early is by going to bed early at the same time every night and making sure you get between 7-9 hours of quality sleep, which will help you feel refreshed and ready for the day when you wake up.
Upon awakening, instead of reaching for your phone to check your social media feeds, emails or text messages leave your phone alone for a good moment and instead practice mindfulness. When you wake up your mind is still in an alpha state (the doorway to the subconscious mind) making those few moments of rising the easiest time for your mind to absorb information at a deep level.
Use this to your advantage by practising mindfulness, which is all about implementing positive processes that are designed to improve your life for the better. This can be meditating, visualization or/and affirming positive affirmations.Practicing mindfulness is a simple but powerful habit that will set a very positive tone for the rest of the day and transform your life for the better over time.
3.Drink Lemon Water
When we sleep our bodies go into fasting mode, hence why the first meal of the day is called BREAK-FAST. We are literally “breaking a fast “ when we eat our first meal!
But Before eating anything, it’s important to drink water to hydrate the body first thing. Drinking plain water is great but adding fresh lemon juice to the water is even better. I drink 32 oz of warm water with a squeeze of half a lemon every morning when I wake up. Check out the benefits of drinking lemon water here.
4.Make Your Bed & Open Your Windows
Always make your bed and open your windows every morning! Making your bed is a simple but effective habit that helps you start the day on the right foot and sets a positive tone to be more productive throughout the day. Opening your windows gets fresh air and sunlight in your home and decreases indoor air pollutants, which also make you feel better.
5.Eat A Nourishing Breakfast
Most people skip breakfast! Don’t be like most people! Like I mentioned above when we eat our first meal, we are breaking a fast so we should always eat foods high in nutrients to nourish and fuel the body.
In fact, skipping breakfast can slow down your metabolism and lead to unhealthy snacking later on in the day, which makes the body prone to pile on unwanted weight. To avoid this make sure you don’t skip breakfast. My top 2 favourite breakfast meals are porridge topped with fruit or a meal replacement green smoothie.
Exercising in the morning is great because of two things:
- Leaving physical tasks such as exercise until later in the day means you have a higher chance of not actually carrying through with it.It’s better to tackle exercise earlier in the day so it’s done, dusted and out the way.
- Exercise realises happy chemicals in the brain, so working out in the morning will make you feel really good which sets a positive tone for your day ahead.
7.Listen To A Self-Development Audio
When you’re getting ready for your day, or when you’re commuting to work or school, instead of putting on the radio or music from your phone, put a self-development audio instead. It’s crucial you feed your mind inspiring, motivating and positive knowledge every day and doing it in the morning is even better.
8.Be Consistent With Your Morning Routine
It’s no use practising the activities I’ve listed above every now and then. Their called habits for a reason and it’s important you practise these activities every day until they become second nature to you. This is how you will get the most benefits from them and improve the quality of your life.
