So, you’re obviously interested in your health right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here right now, reading this…Well let me share with you something important that will serve you greatly on your health journey:
In order to get healthier, lose weight successfully and maintain a healthy body one of the crucial things to understand is sugar cravings.
This is because sugar plays a very important role in the human body and understanding sugar cravings, what they mean and what causes them will help you gain a deeper understanding on how the body works, which will give you the knowledge to work with your body, instead of working against your body like many women do, which ultimately will lead you to achieve your health goals.
Being in the position of knowing exactly what steps to take to lose weight the healthy way and (more importantly) keep the weight off and maintain a healthy, lean body long term is a very empowering position that many women don’t experience these days, which is sad.
And it’s sad because losing and keeping weight off is a top goal most women have, but never actually get to accomplish.
And the main reason a lot of women (including my past self) struggle with weight issues in the first place is because most of us have no clue about how to eat in a way that nourishes and fuels our body, satisfies our natural cravings while meeting our body’s nutritional needs.
But once you gain an understanding about these things (which are very easy to grasp) and put them into action, struggles like weight issues and sugar cravings will be a thing of the past in your world.
The first step to getting to that position is to understand sugar and it’s role in the human body.
What Is Sugar And What’s Its Role In The Human Body?
Sugar is a type of carbohydrate. Out of the three macronutrients (Carbohydrate, protein and fat), the body requires large amounts of carbohydrates because the body uses carbohydrates to make glucose, which the body uses as energy.
Every cell in the body runs on glucose and the brain runs primarily on glucose. Glucose is fuel for the human body.
Think carbohydrates as gas required to fuel a car. Without gas, a car won’t run. In the same way, without carbohydrates, your body will not have the fuel it needs to support your everyday mental and physical activities.
Good Carbs v.s Bad Carbs
Although carbohydrates are essential for health and our survival, not all carbohydrates are created equal. Processed carbohydrates like white refined sugar and refined grains and all products that contain large amounts of either or both of these ingredients such as white bread, fizzy drinks, sweets, doughnuts, cookies and other processed, packaged products are not good for our health and should be avoided.
This is because refined white sugar and refined grains have been stripped of almost all vitamins, minerals and fibre during the refining process, so they’re just empty calories.
Good carbs, on the other hand, are foods that are high-carb but are natural and whole such as fruit, whole grains, beans and legumes and starchy vegetables such as potatoes.Basically whole plant foods.
These foods are loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants and the body thrive on a diet that is predominately made of these whole plant foods because not only do these foods nourish the body but they also provide the body with it’s preferred source of fuel, glucose.
Why Do We Get Sugar Cravings?
Because glucose is our body’s main source of fuel, every human being is naturally hard-wired to seek out high carb foods. This is very crucial to understand! Everybody has a sweet tooth and it’s normal and natural to get sugar cravings.
Sugar cravings only become a problem when you ignore them. I will talk about this more below. For now, just remember that the only way to “beat” sugar craving is actually by embracing your natural craving for carbohydrates.
What Happens When You Ignore Sugar Cravings?
In western society, most women (and men) are carbophobic due to the confusion and misinformation that centres around carbohydrates.
And because of this most people demonise all carbs and think they’re unhealthy and promote weight gain.So carbs tend to be the first thing people limit or cut out completely out their diet when trying to lose weight.
You may be surprised to know ( I was so shocked when I found this out) that they’re actually a lot of people out there who limit and cut out fruit, rice and potatoes out of their diet thinking that these foods are unhealthy and cause weight gain, which is crazy!
As I’ve outlined above not all carbs are created equal and good carbs (such as fruit, rice and potatoes) are essential for good health.
In fact, drastically limiting or completely cutting good carbohydrates out of your diet is the WORST thing you can do if you want to lose weight the healthy (sane) way and maintain a healthy body long term.
This is because following low carb diets not only makes you feel miserable and mentally and physically exhausted (because of lack of glucose to your body and brain) it always, always, always leads to SEVERE sugar cravings anyway.
Remember we are naturally hard-wired to seek out carbohydrates because it’s our body’s prefered source of fuel. I know I keep repeating this but it’s really important for you to understand and never forget this if you want to have success on your health journey.
So if you get sugar cravings ( which just means you’re under-carbed and your body needs to top up on glucose) and you ignore these cravings and don’t consume carbohydrate, you will just get more and more severe sugar cravings until you give your body what it needs… Carbohydrates!
But when you’ve got the severe sugar cravings by this point your body is so desperate for glucose it will draw you towards the bad carbs such as cookies, ice cream, chocolate and other highly processed junk foods as these foods contain a higher concentration of sugar.
And when you’re drawn to the highly processed junk foods, this is when you’re prone to have a binge out on these foods! Desperate times call for desperate measures my friend!
So please work with your body and don’t let yourself get to the stage where you’re so under carbed that you will eat 2 whole tubs of ice cream, 6 bars of chocolate followed by 20 doughnuts!
Ok, I’m being dramatic (or maybe you can relate…) but seriously guys don’t let yourself get to a place where you’re prone to binge out on rubbish because it will set you up to fail! Binging out on unhealthy foods won’t make you feel good about yourself and it will mess up your metabolism.
This will delay you reaching your health goals or worse make you never achieve your health goals, especially if the binging happens on a regular basis, which it will if you if you follow low carb diets.
How To Embrace Sugar Cravings
Like I mentioned above the only way to “beat” sugar craving is actually by embracing your body’s natural craving for sugar and you do this by making the good carbs ( whole plant foods) the staples of your diet.
That way you’re always fuelled up and your natural cravings for sugar are satisfied. Then you won’t reach for those highly processed junk foods because when your body is nourished properly you don’t act like a crazy cookie monster that will eat anything and everything in site and instead you’re rational and in control of yourself.
Anyway below are two simple ways you can start to embrace your sweet tooth if you experience sugar cravings:
1.Eat More Fruit
Fruit is the perfect food for human beings. It tastes delicious and it’s loaded with vitamins and mineral that nourish the body and boosts up the immune system which protects the body against diseases.
Eat as much fruit as you like and eat a whole range of different fruits so you get a wide spectrum of nutrients.
You can make a meal out of fruits by having a big fruit smoothie for breakfast or lunch. When you do this just make sure your meal replacement smoothie contains enough calories to actually count as a meal replacement.
To take your smoothie game to a whole ‘nother level you can add a handful of leafy greens to your fruit smoothies and turn it into a green smoothie.Click here to check out the top 10 benefits of green smoothies.
2.Eat More Starchy Whole Foods
As well as fruit, eat a diet that centres around starchy whole foods. This is root vegetables like potatoes and whole grains like brown rice, oats and beans and legumes.
By the way, fruit and starchy foods do not promote weight gain and make you fat! I repeat fruit and starchy foods do not promote weight gain and make you fat!
It’s refined white sugar and refined grains and high-fat foods such as oils and animal products (meat, dairy and eggs) that promote weight gain, not fruit or starchy foods. Click here to check out the 5 “health foods” that are making you gain weight.
A high-carb, low-fat plant-based diet that centres around whole foods is the diet that will satisfy your natural cravings, nourish your body, prevent diseases, promote weight loss and (the best part) keep that weight off long term. It’s a lifestyle that will have you looking and feeling your best for life!
By the way, I’ve created a 7 Day Green Smoothie E-course and it teaches everything you need to know about living the green smoothie lifestyle.
It covers everything from how to make meal replacement smoothies to how to succesffully lose weight with green smoothies and everything else in between. The e-course is free and you can get access to it by clicking on the image below
