One of my daily health goals is to eat 1 cup of berries every day. I’ll explain why I’ve set this goal for myself in a moment, but first I have to admit that I don’t always manage to hit this goal every single day, but I do manage to hit it about 5 days a week, which is fine by me because when it comes to health goals it’s all about consistency rather than perfection.
This is because your health goals should be a part of your overall lifestyle so understandably you’re not going to be able to stick to all your health goals 100% of the time because #lifehappens and this is OK as long as you’re sticking to them the majority of the time.
Back to the berries… why should we eat them every day?
Well, that’s because they’re a Superfood.
They’re extremely high in antioxidants and contain anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and even anti-cancer properties. They boost up the immune system protect the brain against age-related memory loss.
They’re hands down one of the healthiest foods on the planet and to make it even better, they’re available in most greengrocers, farmer’s market and supermarkets all year around! That’s why they’re on my list of everyday superfoods.
But, let’s be real… although berries are super healthy, they can also be super expensive, especially if you aim to eat them every day, like I do, which means you’ll need to buy quite a lot of them.
But here’s a little tip… if you buy them frozen instead of fresh you can save yourself a lot of money and obviously they last longer too as they won’t go off as quickly.
I do buy fresh berries from time to time ( HINT: when I can get them for a good deal!) but the berries I use for my green smoothies I always get them frozen. It’s just cheaper! Click here for tips on how to eat healthy on a budget.
Anyway, this green smoothie recipe is the main reason I’m able to (nearly) accomplish my goal of eating berries every day as it’s the green smoothie I drink most frequently.
Berry Blast Green Smoothie
2 Cups of spinach
1 cup of frozen mixed berries
1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds
Juice of half a lemon
1 cup of water
In your blender add the spinach and cup of water and blend until smooth.
Add the cup of berries and flaxseeds and blend again.
Finally, add the bananas and squeeze the juice of half a lemon and blend all together until smooth.
Serve and Enjoy!
Note: If you don’t want to drink this smoothie straight away you can put it in a mansion jar (or any other airtight containers) and place it in the fridge where it can be stored up to 48 hours. If you store it in the fridge, make sure you shake well first before you drink it.
