Growing up I never had great skin. I never suffered from any major skin condition, but my face had a slightly uneven skin tone and looked somewhat dull. I just didn’t have that rich glow.
This led me to start wearing makeup at 12 years old, and not just the usual lip-gloss and a bit of mascara…
Nope! It was heavy makeup.I’m talking about full coverage foundation and powder.
I became so depended on makeup from then on to give me that flawless, clear-skin finish look that I rely went out in public without it on.
My make up addiction went on until my early 20’s and throughout all those years not once did I ever consider that my diet choices (as I followed a very unhealthy diet back then) could be contributing to the appearance of my skin.
I just assumed some people are lucky enough to have radiant, beautiful skin and I just wasn’t one of those people. And even worse I convinced myself that there’s not much I could do about it.
By the way, I have nothing against makeup. It definitely has its time and place and like most women, I love getting dolled up from time to time. I just don’t think it’s good to depend on it ( like I was) and wear it day in day out and feel like you’re not good enough without it.
Anyway back to what I was saying…
So in my early 20’s when I started becoming more health conscious, that’s when I made the massive connection between diet and the impact it can have on our physical radiance (the appearance of hair, skin, and nails).
I notice the more I took care of my body and nourished it with nutrient-rich foods as well as other factors (that I’m going to share with you below) my skin actually looked more radiant. I couldn’t believe that I had finally found the solution to my skin issues! And it was so simple that I don’t know how I hadn’t connected the dots sooner.
Below are 3 steps you can start taking immediately to achieve beautiful, radiant skin naturally:
1.Eat More Raw Fruits & Veggies
When it comes to attaining clear glowing skin, the first thing you must address is what you are putting in your body.
This is because the condition of your skin is the reflection of your internal health, and the foods you eat have the biggest effect on your overall health and physical radiance.
Raw fruits and vegetables (especially dark leafy greens) are loaded with essential vitamins and beautifying minerals which all contribute to attaining clear glowing skin. The easiest way to up your intake of raw fruits and veggies is by making a habit of drinking a green smoothie every day.
As well as drinking green smoothies daily, I highly encourage you to adopt a plant-based diet, which is made up of fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds. These foods are very beneficial for not just skin-health but overall health as well.Click here to check out the 12 everyday superfoods you should be eating daily.
Hydration is another major key to attaining clear, glowing skin as dehydration can cause the skin to appear dull and ashy.
When I started my health journey drinking more water was the first thing I did before anything else. I went from hardly drinking any water to drinking 2 litres of water a day, and in a very short space of time, a few days, in fact, I noticed my skin started looking more radiant.
So aim for 2-3 litres of water a day. The easiest way to achieve this goal is by drinking 1 litre of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice upon awakening. And then from there drink more water throughout the day until you reach 2-3 litres. Your skin will Thank You for it!
3.Use Natural Skin Care Products
Washing and moisturizing your skin using quality natural products is essential for beautiful, glowing skin.
Conventional skin care beauty products (from moisturizers, shower gels to soaps) are really bad news for your skin! They strip off the skin’s natural oils which then cause dull and dry skin, which is the last thing you want. So it’s best to stick to only natural products.
Personally, I’ve ditched all conventional skin care products because
1. A lot of the ingredients they contain are toxic!
2. They were too harsh on my skin anyway and were making my skin very dry and ashy!
So, stick with natural oils such as coconut oil, olive oil or jojoba oil. If you want to use a body butter instead of oil opt for unrefined cocoa butter or shea butter. These products add moisture to your skin and contain beautifying properties that promote healthy, glowing skin.
When it comes to washing your body and face, again only use products that contain natural ingredients. There’re many natural products available these days but the one product that I love and been using for many years now is African black soap.
You can use it as a face wash and body wash and it’s available as a block of soap or in a liquid form. It contains a few ingredients and they’re all natural ingredients, driven from plants! Talk about simplicity!
So there’re the 3 simple steps you can start doing today to attain clear, glowing skin! I will post a part 2 of this post in the near future so look out for it.
